The Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) is pleased to invite public and school libraries to apply for a free Moon viewing kit! To qualify for a kit, applicants must commit to hosting an International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN) event on Saturday, October 8, 2011. In addition, each successful applicant must commit to fulfilling reporting requirements.
Successful applicants will each receive one InOMN Moon viewing kit, which they may keep, preferably for circulation to local families. Each kit is valued at $400 and includes binoculars for viewing the Moon as well as children’s books, a Moon map, and other resources for families to enjoy. The Lunar and Planetary Institute will cover shipping costs. Find out more and apply. The application deadline is Monday, August 22, 2011
InOMN events are a fun way to celebrate the Moon with your community! The official InOMN website provides a wealth of information and tips for planning your own event. Partnership with another organization, such as a local astronomical society, is preferred. Consider featuring one or more of these activities and resources at your event:
• Family Space Days “Moon” activities for children ages 5–8 and their families.
• Explore! To the Moon and Beyond!—with NASA’s LRO mission for children ages 8–13.
• Explore! Marvel Moon for children ages 8–13.
NASA Lunar Science Institute (NLSI) traveling exhibits (limited number available—request early!).
